Company Backgrounder

Mission

To create privacy-first, open hardware computing devices that empower developers and technology enthusiasts with full control over their technology.

The Journey

When the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent chip shortages hit the technology industry, Popcorn Computer made a strategic decision: rather than compromise on quality or rush to market, the company would:

  • Establish independent operations in Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei electronics district
  • Upgrade hardware specifications significantly
  • Implement rigorous quality testing protocols
  • Maintain direct relationships with component suppliers

This approach resulted in a device that exceeds original specifications:

  • 8× more RAM (16GB vs 2GB)
  • Faster storage (UFS vs eMMC)
  • More powerful processor (A733 octa-core vs original design)

Philosophy

"Technology should empower users, not exploit them. We build devices that respect your privacy, give you full control, and perform exceptionally well."— José Angel Torres, Founder

Press FAQs

What makes Pocket PC different from other single-board computers?

Pocket PC is a complete portable computing device, not just a board. It features premium components (LPDDR5 RAM, UFS storage), professional quality control, and an integrated form factor designed for portability.

Why the delays since the original crowdfunding campaign?

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global chip shortages significantly impacted our original timeline. Rather than compromise on quality, we made the strategic decision to upgrade the hardware and establish our own operations in Shenzhen for better quality control.

How is this better than what was originally promised?

Significantly. We upgraded from 2GB DDR4 to up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, switched from eMMC to faster UFS storage, and implemented a more powerful A733 octa-core processor. All original backers receive these upgrades at no additional cost.

What can I do with the LoRa radio?

The LoRa radio enables long-range (10km+) wireless communication without cellular or WiFi infrastructure. Use cases include mesh networks, IoT sensor networks, off-grid communications, and emergency/disaster recovery scenarios.

Who is the target customer?

Developers, makers, IoT enthusiasts, and privacy-conscious users who want portable Linux computing with full control over their device.

Where do you manufacture?

We operate from Shenzhen, China, with direct oversight of quality control, component sourcing, and testing.
